You could make the argument that this is the most cinematic trailer for The Phantom Pain yet, which is saying something.

You could do worse than a Hideo Kojima trailer that’s cut and strung together to make even the pre-release experience feel like watching a trailer for a movie you’re dying to see. Konami has brought a section of this incredibly-hyped title to Gamescom for attendees to play while the rest of us get a trailer as a consolation prize. I love the launch trailer. The Phantom Pain has come to Gamescom, handing out what might be the final trailer before the game’s release in less than a month. I know every year we are getting tons of great games, but 2015 is blowing it out of the park so far.

Not to mention all the top-tier multiplayer shooters coming later this year like Halo 5: Guardians, Star Wars: Battlefront and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. We all need to get busy playing MGSV: TPP and finishing The Witcher 3 before Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3 drop. I still haven’t finished The Witcher 3 yet and MGSV: TPP is almost here. The open-world genre has been killing it this year. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain doesn’t just respect my intelligence as a player, it expects it of me, putting it in league that few others occupy.

There have certainly been sandbox action games that have given me a bigger world to roam, or more little icons to chase on my minimap, but none have pushed me to plan, adapt, and improvise the way this one does. The Phantom Pain may be a contender for one of the best action games ever made, but is undoubtedly the best Metal Gear game there is. When it comes to storytelling, there has never been a Metal Gear game that’s so consistent in tone, daring in subject matter, and so captivating in presentation. The best elements from the past games are here, and the new open-world gameplay adds more to love on top.

There has never been a game in the series with such depth to its gameplay, or so much volume in content. MGSV takes the best of a great series and creates a series’ best in the process. Perhaps MGSV’s best quality is how in pulling gameplay to the foreground and letting much of the exposition remain optional, it opens it up to be enjoyed by people who have in the past been put off by its weirdness, serving as both the perfect entry point and a satisfying conclusion. Here’s what a few outlets have said so far. If you have any questions about MGSV: TPP, Schreier’s post over at Kotaku is a good place to start.Ĭritics have universally praised MGSV: TPP so far. “It’s really nothing like a Ubisoft open-world game - there are big open maps, yeah, but each mission takes place within specific areas on those maps, and if you leave a mission’s given area, you abort that mission.” The reader was concerned if it Kojima’s open-world was similar to Ubisoft’s. Kotaku’s Jason Schreier (who, like pretty all critics, loves the game) touched on this aspect after a Kotaku reader asked about the “open world” in MGSV: TPP. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain ups the ante with impressive graphics coupled with wide-open areas. We all remember how Metal Gear Solid looked more than 15 years ago, but to see the differences in one trailer is staggering. It never ceases to amaze me how far games have come in graphics. It’s a fantastic trailer and is probably Kojima’s last.
